Sarah Theresa McCorriston, 1868-1924
Sarah Theresa McCorriston (September 30, 1868-April 27, 1924) was a part-Hawaiian pioneer of the Island of Molokai born during the reign of King Kamehameha V.
Sarah Theresa McCorriston, known as “Sallie,” was born in Pearl City (likely Waiawa), Oʻahu, Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, on September 30, 1868, to Daniel McCorriston (1840-1927) and Anna McColgan (c.1851-1907). [1] [2] [3] [4]
In 1873, when Sallie was about five, she and her family moved to Kamalō, Molokai, where her father was engaged in sugar cane farming and, later, ranching. She lived at the McCorriston homestead with her parents, siblings, cousins, and aunt and uncle. [5] [6]
On July 23, 1894, Sallie married Edward Vincent Dunn (1869-1938) at the Catholic Church in Honolulu, Oʻahu, now known as the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. [7] They had eleven children, ten of whom lived to adulthood:
Daughter Carolyn Lillian Dunn (1895-1984), known as “Carrie,” was born in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on September 30, 1895, married James Hood (1891-1929) in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on August 23, 1923, and died in Kailua, Oʻahu, on October 18, 1984
Daughter Mae Edith Dunn (1897-1989) was born in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on May 2, 1897, married Roger Thomas “Tim” Atcherley (1904-1968) in January 1926, and died in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on May 15, 1989
Son George Emmet Dunn (1899-1953), known as “Sonny", was born in Kamalō, Molokai, on February 28, 1899, and died in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on December 7, 1953
Son Daniel William Dunn (1900-1954), known as “Danny,” was born in Kamalō, Molokai, on April 4, 1900, and died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on July 7, 1954
Daughter Eva McCorriston Dunn (1901-1962) was born in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on July 30, 1901, married James Macklin Hill (1899-1978) in Kamalō, Molokai on August 22, 1925, and died in Sacramento, California, on July 14, 1962
Daughter Thelma Annie Dunn (1905-1924) was born on Molokai on March 24, 1905, and died in Lahaina, Maui, on September 18, 1924
Daughter Kathryn Vera Dunn (1907-1987), known as “Billie,” was born in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on January 23, 1907, and died in Aiea, Oʻahu, on January 31, 1987
Daughter Margaret Elizabeth Dunn (1907-1987), known as “Koni,” was born in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on January 23, 1907, and died in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on September 14, 1987
Daughter Alice Antoinette Dunn (1910-1999) was born in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on November 5, 1910, married 1st Willard John Conley (1899-1957) in Kaunakakai, Molokai, on October 22, 1932, married 2nd to the same in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on June 5, 1935, and died in Pearl City, Oʻahu, on March 26, 1999
Daughter Harriet Sarah Dunn (1913-1999), known as “Hattie,” was born in Kamalō, Molokai, on January 29, 1913, married Clifford Libert Hansmann (1909-1999) in Honolulu, Oʻahu, on April 29, 1933, and died in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, on July 5, 1999
Sallie died at the Kula Sanatorium of pulmonary tuberculosis in Kula, Maui, Territory of Hawaiʻi, on April 27, 1924. She is buried in the St. Joseph Church Cemetery in Kamalō, Molokai. [1] [8] [9]
